So here is the mum and garter from Sophomore year!
TIPS:
*The volleyball I used with the bear is a wooden disc purchased at any craft store.  Painted it white and used a Sharpie to draw the lines.
*The disco balls I used on the garter and mum are miniature Christmas tree ornaments purchased at a craft store.

Homecoming Mums-Texas Style!

It's that time of year again...HOMECOMING!!!  Here in Texas the young man gives his date a mum which she wears to school and the homecoming football game.  The young lady gives her date a garter (or garter mum...or even "man mum" as I heard one 9 year old call it).  In Texas these are huge expensive works of art not "just a flower".

For the past few years I have made my daughters mums (with the help and guidance of their dates as it IS from them) along with the garters.  Sure you can purchase a mum but first of all they are expensive AND it's just too fun and easy to make!  Not to mention your kids will get exactly what they want AND you will save money!  Can't beat that!

I'm not going to post all the directions to make a mum and I have not taken any step by step pictures.  I will however post pictures of the mums and garters I have made for my kids and their dates along with several tips and tricks I have learned over the years.  There are a lot of websites out there that offer really great tutorials on homecoming mum and garter making.

I have started a board on Pinterest called Homecoming Mums-Texas Style, and can't wait to add more pins!  I am always on the look out for new and creative things to do year after year. (Did I mention I have FOUR kids-I will be making these for a while!)  Pinterest is where I can keep all of my mum ideas in one place!  Even if you only like ONE thing about a mum you see I suggest you go ahead and Pin It!  You will have forgotten that great idea come next year!

Below is the first mum and garter I ever made.  They were both for Freshman.

Making the flower into a volleyball!
I used black sparkly pipe cleaners and a styrofoam  ball cut in half as a guide for the volleyball.
Once I had the volleyball the way I wanted it on the styrofoam I simply popped off the pipe cleaners and glued them on the flower!

TIP!
The following year I was a little more careful NOT to cover up the kids names or school name!
I was also a little more careful when it came to spacing out the charms/trinkets and not put too many at the bottom.
